Hitherthough is a tale,
Of a young maiden named Gail.
She lived in the marvelous city of Florence,
Her beauty bestowed from her mother, in accordance.

Her hair, it would gleam, like the midsummer sun,
And many had thought she was a marvelous one.
Twas long and wavy, went down to her back,
And have I mentioned, it was the finest; Black?
Many were jealous of this wondrous girl,
As upon her neck were some beautiful pearls.
Her skin was the lightest that one had ever seen,
A creamy pallor, with a gentle pink sheen.

She would wear the finest dresses,
Small and petite, people thought of her as precious.
Measuring in at five foot none,
Weighing about one hundred and one,
She could look up at you with those doe eyes,
And make you blink in surprise,
Your wish would be her command,
Anything that she could simply demand.
Her eyes were as bright as the harvest moon,
And with just a look, you would simply swoon.

But what you do not know is of her stature,
Even the priests do not give her rapture.
For she is a courtesan, higher than the rest,
And even put simply, she is the best.
Her mother was too, but then she grew,
And married a man of five foot two.
Away from these lines is a different story,
One that could get a tad bit gory.

Now Gail was a lovely lady, it's as simple as that,
Entrancing many men, as though they were rats.
Every thing that she did was remarkably fine,
Even the way that she sipped her wine.
Many good young men had got caught in her web,
And the feelings they had for her never seemed to ebb.
She struck them with her beauty and words of wonder,
They never knowing it would be their own plunder.

Gail had no part in the piteous church,
And instead she sat upon her own fancy perch.
This perch was laden with luxurious flowers,
Brought to her upon the darkest of hours.
She watched all the nobles, the commoners gather,
Staying with her many men, as she'd much prefer rather.
Not understanding why people would think,
There was someone controlling their every breath and blink.
So in the end, of what you have learned,
Is that this fair courtesan is not quite concerned,
With the meaningless theme of religion,
Because it doesn't quite matter, when you're in her position.

Power and money is what she loved best,
She loved to live high, above all the rest.
Courtesans must be taught many things,
Like how to read books and make bows out of strings.
She indeed has an education,
Very well may be the finest woman in the nation.

While other mere women were caught up in the house,
Gail would be flaunting what was under her blouse.
She wasn't afraid of what people would think,
For after all, she could bring men down with a wink.
This was her power; it's what she loved most,
Even much more than making a toast.

But all lives must end, as this one does too,
And Gail faded away, into that dark sea of blue.

I had to write this for my english class, because we read the Canterbury tales... Bleh
